I want everything in this room. EVERY. SINGLE. THING. From that amazing buffalo check accent wall to the deer crib bedding, and those black and white accents (hello DIY swiss cross curtains project) - every part of this nursery came together in a perfectly eclectic blend of some of the top nursery design trends of 2017. See us in action putting the nursery together below:
So now that you've seen how it all came together, welcome, come on in... ask us questions! We'd love to help you create your dream nursery too! We've even linked everything we can think of that we used to create this gorgeous room at the end of this post. Baby boy Crew will be making his debut any day now, and we can't wait for him to see what a wonderful nest awaits his (hopefully) sleep filled nights!
The design process of this buffalo check nursery was so fun! The momma-to-be knew she wanted to start with the rustic trend with deer accents. Her color palette was black and white with a touch of navy. She loved the trendy deer accents and wanted the nursery to have a flow with the rest of her home. Their entire home has a rustic modern style with big chunky furniture, warm colors, and an eclectic mix of styles... challenge accepted! And here was the result:
Caden Lane had just introduced their Hunter's Deer Bumperless Baby Bedding, and we knew immediately it's ivory and black tones and deer head silhouette would be a perfect fit for this deer themed boy nursery. Plus, deer and buffalo check plaid go together so perfectly — it's just the look we wanted!
Design Tip: The first step in nursery design is establishing a theme or color palette for the room, but remember, it doesn't have to be in everything! For example, this bedding featured the trendy deer silhouette print, so it would have been too much for her to repeat the deer heads over the crib - but we LOVE how the play on words with the "Love You Dearly" incorporated the deer horns without being overly themed.
It's no secret that we are a fan of chunky old furniture, painted, and made new again! The super dark navy on the dresser pulls in the navy tones from the Buffalo Check Wall, and I'm obsessed with the brown tonal mirror and black funky deer heads - who says gold glitter can't be in a boy's room? Not us!
Texture is a room's best friend! Any chance you get to add texture with ropes, wood, chunky blankets, tassels, or anything else beyond just furniture, wall art, and bedding will help make the space feel warmer and more intriguing. Even a great rug like the tribal inspired MACHINE WASHABLE rug used in Crew's nursery warms up the space, and by laying a rug at a diagonal, it helps to add interest to the room.
Let's everyone stop and take a moment to admire these PERFECT DIY painted curtains. They are blackout curtains in a thick canvas material, with perfectly sponge painted plus signs that give it a modern feel and break up the boring solid black panels. Where's that clapping hands emoji when we need it?!?
And this wouldn't be a Caden Lane Nursery without a call out to that fabulous crib bedding! Is it just us, or does a crib look naked with just a crib sheet on it? Even these chunky cribs need some textile love, and we kept it modern and simple with a classic dark gray crib skirt, ivory and black deer crib sheet, and the most amazing accent pillows you've ever seen.
Obviously, the pillows will be taken out of the crib before baby Crew's arrival - but how perfect are they for a comfy reading nook, or just lounging on the floor for tummy time? You can NEVER have too many pillows. In any room in the house.
And last, but surely not least, that rustic wood sign. We had the talented Tracey's Fancy make this custom wall art for this nursery, but you can also order the white vinyl version to create your own masterpiece too!

What colors of paint did you use? went to the page and it doesnt say
Thank you!
Where did you get the rug!
When I have a boy I will do that theme and that style. It looked very very, very cute.
Hi Sarah, it does seem that the website is currently having some issues for the buffalo check tutorial, Tracey’s Facebook page says they’re working on getting the site back up as soon as possible. I would definitely try to check out her post as she goes into detail with measurement information and such, but it’s essentially painting stripes and overlapping the colors. :)
Hi Marlaina! Thanks so much for your comment. The rope shelf was hung using some sturdy nails in the wall, although I’m sure there are many ways it can be hung. I hope this helps!
