Step-by-Step Guide to Planning the Perfect Nursery

Step-by-Step Guide to Planning the Perfect Nursery

Planning a baby nursery can be oh so exciting, but also so overwhelming! Here are a few tips that will help you plan and prepare the perfect nursery for your upcoming little one.

1. Map your layout

Once you’ve decided which room you’re going to designate to be the nursery, take some time to map out your desired layout for the room. Make sure to include space for sleeping, changing, playing, and nursing. Focus first on the bigger items that will be in the room. Take measurements if needed to ensure that everything you plan to buy and/or put on your registry will fit in your nursery.

2. Choose a theme/color palette

Once you’ve mapped out your floor plan, it’s time to choose a theme and/or color palette. A great place to start looking is Pinterest. Take note of nursery ideas you like (and don’t like) so you can reference them later when picking out decor for the room.

One tip is to not go overboard with the theme. As the child gets older, they will likely outgrow the nursery theme and you will have to redo the entire room (again!) A lot of parents are opting for patterns and color palettes instead so that the nursery can grow with the child and their changing tastes.

3. Pick out and register for the most important nursery items

Now that you’ve decided on a nursery theme, it’s time to pick out the bigger furniture that you will need. If possible, register for items that can be used as the child grows and that can be used for multiple purposes. For example, pick a dresser that can double as a changing table and a crib that will grow with them. That way, you don’t have to buy all new furniture once they outgrow the baby stage!

4. Start shopping around for décor

Once you’ve got the big stuff picked out, now comes the most fun part: décor! It’s time to pull out those Pinterest boards you created and see what you want to buy or register for. Don’t hold back on your registry. If you know you will be purchasing an item for the room, put it on your registry!

5. Start arranging and organizing!

Once you start to collect nursery furniture and decor from your registry or otherwise, it’s time to start putting the room together! Start with the bigger items first, and arrange them in a way that makes the most sense for functionality and safety. Next, start incorporating the smaller decor pieces like shelves, rugs and organizers.

One tip: take things slow! Don’t burn yourself out trying to get the entire nursery done in one day. Take things slow and enjoy the process. Soak in these moments with your partner, and don’t forget to have fun with it! You’ll be so glad you did.
