Your Postpartum Pain Management Game Plan!

Your Postpartum Pain Management Game Plan!

Regardless of what type of birth you have, you will most likely have some pain to manage afterwards. This can be overwhelming, especially since you’ll have a new baby to care for as well. Fortunately, a little bit of preparation goes a long way. Read through the tips below to help put together a postpartum pain management game plan before delivery day!

For vaginal delivery:

1. Use an OTC pain medication like ibuprofen or any pain medication prescribed to you.

2. Ice packs on the perineal area can be used to reduce swelling and pain.

3. After using the restroom, use a peri bottle with warm water to cleanse and soothe the area.

4. Use a soothing over-the-counter medication such as Tucks, witch hazel, or hemorrhoid ointment.

5. Dermoplast is a popular spray that can help with pain in the perineal area.

6. Try a Sitz bath to promote the healing of tears.

7. Breast pain is common as your milk comes in. Nurse or pump often to manage this tenderness. If you are not breastfeeding, wearing a firm supportive bra can help

If you had a c-section, you’ll be recovering from a major surgery.

Here are some pain management tips specifically for c-section mamas:

1. Use a belly binder for some extra support.

2. When coughing or sneezing, hug a pillow against your incision.

3. Use a stool softener and eat lots of fiber to combat constipation that comes from surgery.

4. Use an OTC pain medication like ibuprofen or any pain medication prescribed to you.

5. Avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby.

6. Get up and move as soon as you can! While this may seem daunting, getting up and walking soon after surgery can help ease uncomfortable gas pains.

Here are some of my favorite pain management products. These also make a great gift for any mama-to-be!
