Are you in love with the nautical nursery theme for a baby boy? We are! We love the blue and green hues in this fun and friendly nursery theme. BUT we definitely think that it can be overdone, so when we recently got the chance to design a nautical themed baby boy’s room for ourselves we took a more sophisticated route. No cartoon whale crib sheets or under the sea murals here, baby, just sweet navy blue plaid and soft grays with nautical accents to boot.

Navy Blue Nautical Nursery for a Baby Boy

We love the dark navy accent wall surrounded by an all white room; it makes for a very clean and versatile canvas that can easily grow with your little sailor for years to come. From there, we added in a modern natural finish crib from Babyletto and fun campaign style dresser from Land of Nod in white. I just love how the furniture helps blend the room together with a gradient from the stark white of the dresser to the darker wood accents throughout the other room décor.

Design Tip: Furniture doesn’t have to match perfectly so long as the styles flow and fit together. So use what you have!

Next came the bedding! We decided to go with our Brett’s Navy Gingham collection and stay simple on the crib with the small navy check crib sheet, and gray & navy flat panel crib skirt (Yes, you can put a crib skirt on these modern looking cribs! See our design tip below). Then we pulled in more of the large gingham pattern throughout the nursery with the blanket, changing pad cover, and curtains.

Design Tip: If your crib interferes with how your crib skirt lays on the crib at full length, like this one did, tuck the crib skirt under the mattress to shorten it and avoid the legs or obstruction.

After we knew what furniture and bedding we were going to use, we needed to bring in the nautical accents – this is a nautical nursery after all! So, on our shopping trip we found some amazing nautical accessories like the oars, rope shelf, buoys, and all the wood décor, like the captain’s wheel, anchor and whale at Hobby Lobby. We were even inspired to create our own DIY rope name sign for above the crib when we came across a fun blank wood plank panel, which made the project amazingly easy! We picked up some rope from the store as well and were on our way back to the nursery. You’ll find the Rope Name Sign DIY post here if you want to make your own!

And what about that "Knot All Who Wander Are Lost" print! It's from our new collection of downloadable art prints. We're all love eyes with how well it coordinates with the nautical nursery theme.

The room came together with some more soft accents found at Target. The pillows and throws we added in polished off the nautical look in a sophisticated way that we just love! We can’t wait for baby Luke to come home and enjoy this amazing nautical nursery.
