Two classic baby girl colors are pink and purple. Some people heavily lean towards one color or the other while some love them both. Let’s find out what our designer, Katy Mimari, has to say about these two girly nursery colors! You might even get some great pink and purple nursery ideas along the way. Where do you stand? Pink or Purple? Or both?

Well first of all there are a million shades of pink and purple, and each and every one of them has a special place in my heart! Lilac currently is a front runner in the purple shades, and paired with gold it's just stunning. (More on that below.) But the blush shade of pink, like in our most recentblush and gold nursery is the sweetest shade of pink I’ve seen in a while. And I try not to play favorites, but let's be real, BLUSH, you are my favorite.

Pink Nursery Ideas

You just recently photographed one of our amazing employee’s nurseries who went with a very elegant pink design. Why do you think pink is such a crazy popular color for baby girls?

Pink has always been a top pick in baby girl nursery design, but gone are the days of Pepto Bismal shaded walls. I love how Harlow's nursery combines several shades of pink, with the lightest being the base wall colors and the accents (like the curtains, bedding, and accessories) pop darker shades with different textures. But still, there's no question that pink still rules in baby girl nursery design.

Pink seems like such a versatile color, where is your favorite place in the nursery to incorporate it?

It's pretty easy to over-do pink, so I like to use it in the decor pieces or textiles. Our most basic rule for any single shade in the nursery is if the walls are all pink, then the bedding and decor should contrast against it. And vice-versa! If you pick pink baby bedding, then make sure you are using a contrast color for the walls - because there IS such a thing as too much pink!

Some of our most popular crib bedding sets are pink, such as Blake’s Vintage Pink Linen & Lace Collection, Pink & Gray Sweet Lace Damask Crib Bedding Collection (Discontinued), & our Pink & Gold Dot Ruffle Baby Bedding Collection. What is your current favorite pink crib bedding for a nursery?

I'm completely obsessed with our new collection ofwatercolor flower bedding, specifically Harlows Watercolor Rose Crib Set. I love the whimsical pastel rose pattern in big scale, and the combination of pinks varies from bright fuchsia to pastel pink.

Purple Nursery Ideas

Purple is classically called the color of royalty, do you think purple is the more elegant of the two colors?

Purple does have a sophisticated hue about it - from lavender and lilac, to deep burgundy... it does not disappoint in nursery design. I love how the purple accents pop from the all white color scheme in this nursery -it's the perfect example of how different shades can work perfectly together in design.

I love how this purple nursery feels so fresh and clean but still incorporates a good amount of purple which can sometimes feel overwhelming as a color. What advice do you have for incorporating bold colors like purple in the nursery?

When you are using bold pops of color, the safest bet is to incorporate them in accents or decor pieces like a rug, pillow, or curtains. Of course, a dark contrasted accent wall can be gorgeous with lighter furniture in front of it - so never be afraid of color! Worst case scenario, you re-paint. Nothing is permanent, and the most amazing nursery designs come from the unexpected.

I could easily see our Purple Petunia baby bedding collection (Discontinued) working in a space as pictured above and our ever popular Purple Paige baby bedding collection working in a bolder nursery. If you were decorating a nursery right now which purple crib bedding would you choose?

I would use our Penelope Purple Floral Crib Bedding (Discontinued) - I'm obsessed with anything floral, and I love the combination of the different shades of purple against the white. It's bold, clean, and would be so gorgeous against a purple wall with white accents throughout the room.

Pink & Purple Nursery Ideas

Fun Pink and Purple Nursery Ideasvia Project Nursery

Here is a great example of a nursery that went with both pink and purple and it turned out playful, fun and adorable! The colors were much lighter for the purple and bolder for the pinks and corals. Do you think it helps to have different variations of the colors when pairing any two colors?

Yes, it goes back to my rule of keeping the walls a different shade than the decor. You never want it to be too matchy-matchy. I'm pretty sure most would agree that the most fabulous and original part of this nursery is the curtain panels behind that gorgeous white and gold dresser. The colors in the floral curtains pull together all the different colors featured in the nursery and give it a whimsical feel in contrast to the solid walls.

One of my favorite pink and purple crib collections is our Harper’s Garden pink and purple crib bedding (Discontinued). I can see it easily fitting into a pink and purple nursery. Would you lean more towards pink or purple in the room with that bedding?

I would use a combination of both! I love the light lilac piping on the bumpers, and ruffles on the crib rails, and would probably use that in some combination with mint or aqua to contrast the subtle shade. But, there's plenty of pink in the print design, crib sheet, and ruffle skirt that it would be gorgeous to incorporate light pink curtain panels and maybe a sweet pink rug. The options are endless!
